Batch#01 - 26 Dec - Day 17

Boxing Day Wondergreens

Greens are growing great and with the state of the GR, I am thinking of thinning them out tomorrow. Get the younger ones, one each per pot for brekkie salad.

Tier 1: CR

Leaves are deep green in colour, a slight contrast to the usual romaine that we have for salad from the markets. All looking healthy though. Another observation, the leaves are open.

Tier 2: GR

Observed some minor tip burns, but not too many to be of concern for aesthetics.

Tier 3: RO

The leaves are losing the reddishness. The pace of growth is slower than both the CR and GR. To take note of this when planning for sustainable supplies. Internet sources suggest that maturity is between 45 to 60 days.

Tier 4: BH

Growing well too. No burn tips. Judging from plant size (diameter and height), growth rate seems to be just a little slower compared to GR and CR.

Data

EC1200

- Nice! After adding the 10ml of ABC yesterday together with the 2L of water. Overnight mixing has resulted in a higher EC.

pH6.3

- despite the addition of pH down, the pH still seems to be creeping up.

- added 4 drops of Down again to Tier 4.

- found a commercial article that explains at the surface level, the reasons behind pH increase. This can be caused by both inorganic and organic matter.

- Inorganic matter, such as leca balls act as buffer. They take up the nutrient, causing pH to increase. Organic matter, bacteria primarily, their actions in breaking down chemicals can cause pH to fluctuate apparently. Since current system is showing a consistently upwards trend, hence it is not so likely that the pH rise is due to bacteria action.

WT29

- consistent

By 2100h, the water level has gone quite noticeably. Could be the sudden growth spurt... all the lettuces seems to be growing remarkably fast in just over 12 hours. Perhaps the lettuces are a lot thirstier at this stage.  Not unlike a growing teen. The moment these little humans reach 13yos, the are always hungry. One wonders what happens to the amount of food that they just took in like 2 hours ago!

So topped up another 2L water + 10ml ABC. Adjusted water pH by adding 6 drops of pH Down in total.

YESH! My Yashponics Kit has arrived

The Eagle has Landed! And so here it is. Not exactly an eagle, but the Yashponic 4-tier black kit. After a short 4 days wait after placing the order for pre-existing stock, the box arrived yesterday, late evening.  Time to be Bob the Builder Decided to start on the hardware set up today, since I am unsure how long it will take me. As shared in the videos put up by helpful Yashponics owners, it takes around 2.5 hours. The assembly videos are helpful. They gave me a good idea of how to start and the overall concept of the built. The whole process made all that easier, thanks to the numbered parts. And yes the whole kit is up and ready.  Easy to set up? My Verdict... With the videos provided by Yash, the numbered parts, it's totally a breeze to get the whole kit up. Took my time to unbox the parts, lay them out (in other words, you need some space for all these), and put them together.  Only boo-boo along the way is that I forgot to rinse all the parts as ...

Batch 1 - 7 Mar - System Shutdown after 88 Days

Batch 1 Shutdown (88 days old) The system before Shutdown. Reason? The persistent "fungal" problem, shown below. No matter how often I trim off the outer leaves, the yellowing continues to propagate. As for the Lollas, browning along the leave stems are accelerating.  Red Oaks looks OK though. So it's likely the water is not healthy in some ways, though EC shows 1040. Didn't manage to measure pH.  8Mar update: A fellow UF member shared this site on leafy plant issues. Dengarden . Looks like Yellows.  About Yellows Yellows is a fungal disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum con-glutinans, and triggers formation of large, dull yellowish green patches on the leaves of vegetables. The harmful microorganism survives in warm conditions, which means that you can prevent it by keeping your garden at lower temperatures. The disease can be spread by farm tools, so ensure you clean and disinfect your tools before using them in your ga...

Kailan and Dwarf Green Curled Kale Experiment

9 July Seeded the first batch of KL and DGCK onto grow sponges and placed them onto a bed of wet leca. Did some research and found that generally, KL and DGCK EC requirements overlap that of WCBC, which is 1,200 - 1,800. The idea here is to try out the diversification of greens from the same pool of water and nutrient in the Yashponic Ebb and Flow system. Thus far, the system has been used to grow White-Crowned Bok Choi (WCBC) and Red Amaranth with pretty good consistent, albeit slow, yield. If these germinates well, it will be used to replace the top and second tier of the current system.
