Batch#01 - 03 Jan - Day 25 "WINTER" in Singapore!

2 Days after Harvest! COLD Day! Thirsty lettuces!

All are doing well. And super thirsty. In the morning around 9am, the water level is halfway between mid and min level. By the late afternoon around 6pm, (that's 9 hours difference) the water level has reached the min level. That's like 1L of water being taken up by the plants. Time to top up the nutrients again. And as the title said, it's a pretty cold day in Singapore today. Rained and drizzled through out. News outlet reported that this is due to monsoon anomaly - a little El Nina phenomenon bringing about this wonderful day! No chance to holiday in a winter season country, no problem. El Nina brought winter to Singapore!

COS/ROMAINE:
Growing well after thinning out. Leaves are stretching towards the light. About 6 to 7 inches (22cm tall right now)

GRAND RAPIDS:
Standing up again, with a little help. Interesting to note that the leaves are "sticky". They tend to stick to each other pretty strongly, despite not feeling sticky at all to the touch. I suspect that it could be similar to velcro, meaning to say that the surface of the leaves may have micro "hook-like" structures.

RED OAK:
Doing well too. Spreading out nicely, though not so much upwards. A learning point: may need to leave alternating empty pots between each other. Somewhat like a zig-zag pattern for next seeding.

BUTTERHEAD:
The size is increasing, leaves are also getting taller. Not so identical to those butterhead balls that we see in the markets. I wonder why.

DATA:

EC1188

pH6.38
- added 10 drops of down, hoping to bring down the pH to around 6.

WT27
- super wet and cold day, experiencing winter in Sg!

Water level: near to min level
- topping up another 2L of water, 10ml ABC, moderated by 6 drops of pH down.

YESH! My Yashponics Kit has arrived

The Eagle has Landed! And so here it is. Not exactly an eagle, but the Yashponic 4-tier black kit. After a short 4 days wait after placing the order for pre-existing stock, the box arrived yesterday, late evening.  Time to be Bob the Builder Decided to start on the hardware set up today, since I am unsure how long it will take me. As shared in the videos put up by helpful Yashponics owners, it takes around 2.5 hours. The assembly videos are helpful. They gave me a good idea of how to start and the overall concept of the built. The whole process made all that easier, thanks to the numbered parts. And yes the whole kit is up and ready.  Easy to set up? My Verdict... With the videos provided by Yash, the numbered parts, it's totally a breeze to get the whole kit up. Took my time to unbox the parts, lay them out (in other words, you need some space for all these), and put them together.  Only boo-boo along the way is that I forgot to rinse all the parts as ...

Batch 1 - 7 Mar - System Shutdown after 88 Days

Batch 1 Shutdown (88 days old) The system before Shutdown. Reason? The persistent "fungal" problem, shown below. No matter how often I trim off the outer leaves, the yellowing continues to propagate. As for the Lollas, browning along the leave stems are accelerating.  Red Oaks looks OK though. So it's likely the water is not healthy in some ways, though EC shows 1040. Didn't manage to measure pH.  8Mar update: A fellow UF member shared this site on leafy plant issues. Dengarden . Looks like Yellows.  About Yellows Yellows is a fungal disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum con-glutinans, and triggers formation of large, dull yellowish green patches on the leaves of vegetables. The harmful microorganism survives in warm conditions, which means that you can prevent it by keeping your garden at lower temperatures. The disease can be spread by farm tools, so ensure you clean and disinfect your tools before using them in your ga...

Kailan and Dwarf Green Curled Kale Experiment

9 July Seeded the first batch of KL and DGCK onto grow sponges and placed them onto a bed of wet leca. Did some research and found that generally, KL and DGCK EC requirements overlap that of WCBC, which is 1,200 - 1,800. The idea here is to try out the diversification of greens from the same pool of water and nutrient in the Yashponic Ebb and Flow system. Thus far, the system has been used to grow White-Crowned Bok Choi (WCBC) and Red Amaranth with pretty good consistent, albeit slow, yield. If these germinates well, it will be used to replace the top and second tier of the current system.
